Your body is not a magic button

Why one session is a beginning, and why lasting change takes a little longer.

For a long time I believed, without saying it out loud, that somewhere on the body there is a magic point. Press it, and the problem is gone forever. Working with the body has cured me of that idea, and I want to save you some time.

The body keeps its stories

The deeper I go into this work, the clearer it becomes how much our emotions, worries and stress shape what happens inside, and how food and lifestyle change the way the organs work. Add to that every surgery, every long-term condition, every quirk of how you are built. Each one leaves a print on the whole structure. Even a well-worked scar from an operation wants to be revisited now and then, so it stays soft and does not pull on everything around it.

Why we accept it for the mind, and not for the body

Most people accept that work with a psychologist takes time. A life’s worth of accumulated material is not sorted in a few sessions, and people stay in therapy for years. But when it comes to the body, the same people expect one visit to close the case.

The body is more tangible than the psyche. You can work with it precisely, and results show fast. The real question is how long a result stays with you. And I am convinced the reverse is also true: work on the mind without work on the body is often less productive than it could be.

What actually happens

A first session is mostly about getting to know your body and seeing the whole picture, the way a good tailor takes your measurements before cutting the cloth. Then, if the goal is lasting change rather than a one-off rest, we meet weekly for a while and stretch the gaps as your body learns to hold what it has found. Working with the body is also a key to what lies underneath. Feelings you had hidden begin to surface. Thoughts and energy come back. The body reorganises around a new normal, and that takes a few meetings, not one.

The honest version

You do not have to commit to anything to come once. One session already changes a lot, and it may be exactly what you need this month. But if you have carried something for years, give it a few weeks. Your body will meet you halfway.
