Your brain and your skin are made of the same tissue

Why touch reaches the nervous system faster than words, and what that means for stress.

In massage school one of my teachers said something I have never forgotten: “Our brain and our skin come from the same tissue. Our job is to reprogram the brain through touch.” I remember thinking: how precise. Here is what she meant, and why it changes the way I work.

One tissue, two organs

Early in the womb, the embryo is a few layers of cells. The outer layer, the ectoderm, becomes two things: the skin and the nervous system. Your brain, your spinal cord and the whole surface of your body grew from the same sheet. That is not a metaphor. It is anatomy, and it explains why the two never stopped talking to each other.

The skin is an antenna

Skin is packed with receptors: for pressure, stretch, warmth, vibration, slow movement. Every one of them sends a signal to the brain, and the brain answers with a state. Information that arrives through the skin changes brain activity, mood and the chemistry that runs your stress response. A hand resting on your back is not just a hand. It is a message.

Why touch calms

Safe, unhurried touch wakes up the parasympathetic side of the nervous system, the “rest and digest” side. Breathing slows, the heart settles, muscles stop bracing. This is why people often fall asleep on my table, and why the effect stays with them for days. The body has been shown a different setting, and it remembers.

Reprogramming, gently

Here is the idea behind “reprogramming the brain through touch”. The nervous system learns from experience. If for years it has been learning tension, it needs new experiences to learn ease. Conscious touch can switch the brain from alarm to relaxation. Repeated, it changes old patterns: how you react to stress, how quickly you recover, how much of your body you can actually feel. New sensations create new associations, and with them a stronger connection to yourself.

This is also why bodywork pairs so well with talking therapy. Insight lands deeper when the body is taken care of at the same time.

A question for you

How often do you receive touch that asks nothing of you? How much of your body can you feel right now, sitting where you are? These are not rhetorical questions. They are where a session begins.
